As we dive into the New Year, the Charles Communications team recommits ourselves to sustainability. It is thanks to the many eco-conscious producers and green businesses here in San Francisco that we are fortunate enough to eat in good conscience and do our part to save the earth. This week on All the Swirl, CCA intern Jules Lydon profiles the sustainable “wine pub” in our own Bay Area backyard: Jamber.
Imagine the discovery of beer and the brave soul who dared put this foamy libation to their lips for the first time. It certainly would have seemed a kind of witchcraft. But in today's highly technical world of male dominated brewing, it might come as a shock to learn that traditionally, brewers were women. In fact, it is women's role in brewing history that has shaped many of the tropes around the modern concept of the 'witch.' In anticipation of Halloween, CCA explores the rich history of female brewers and the folkloric superstition that labeled these women as 'witches' in the first place.
